History and Heritage

Mintaro was established in 1849 as an important stopover on the road between Burra and Port Wakefield. By 1860 Mintaro was also South Australia's leading producer of high quality slate. Stone produced by the Mintaro slate quarry was used locally, as well as in many significant buildings in Adelaide and elsewhere. As South Australia's first heritage listed town, there is an abundance of history waiting to be explored in Mintaro and the surrounding Clare Valley region. Take a step back in time and visit the famous sandstone Martindale Hall,  or grab an e-bike and enjoy the picturesque nearby Riesling Trail, passing by a variety of cellar doors and historic buildings.

Clare Valley is well known for its idyllic countryside and winding roads flanked by rows of vines. The Clare Valley is home to a thriving arts and culture scene.
